On 21 December 2006, the inauguration of the opening ceremony of the Boyarka Metrological Centre in Eastern Europe took place in Ukraine. The opening ceremony was attended by the European Energy Commissioner, Mr. Andris Piebalgs, the Energy Charter’s Secretary-General, Mr. Andre Myrne, the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Andrii Kliuev, and Chairman of the Board of “Naftogas of Ukraine” NJSC, Mr. Volodymyr Sheludchenko.

After completion of the main construction works and passing through the accreditation stage, the Regional Metrological Centre, certified under international standards and using state-of-the-art equipment, will provide calibration and verification services on metering facilities for gas transportation companies within the country, and will also offer such calibration and verification services to other countries in the region.

It is within the framework of the INOGATE Programme’s project entitled “Financing small-scale investments for regional oil and gas infrastructures in Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova” that phase I of the  Boyarka Metrological Centre was developed and it is through grant funds allocated by the European Commission that phase II was constructed with success.

According to the Commissioner, Mr. Andris Piebalgs, the launching of the operation of the gas metrology centre is a key event in Ukraine-European Union cooperation in the energy industry: “Such a Centre will facilitate stable delivery of energy resources to Europe”. Further to this statement, Mr. Piebalgs also added that the European Union would also facilitate construction of phase III of the Centre and that additional investments within the framework of the energy cooperation would be increased with Ukraine in order to emphasize on the necessity to strengthen the role of Ukraine as a reliable energy transit country.
