Comp C: Capacity strengthening of the SWMCG by introducing applicable methods for assessing landfill gas potential at the existing dumpsites in Georgia (AHEF.GEO.096)

Objective

During 20-25 November 2014, a team of INOGATE experts is conducting two rounds of special trainings for the personnel of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia in the capital Tbilisi and Kutaisi, West Georgia. The training is a combination of workshops and interactive discussions and on-site demonstrations at the dumpsites in East and West Georgia.

With this assistance, INOGATE aims to facilitate the development of effective waste management practices in Georgia based on EU policies and standards. The INOGATE experts will develop guidelines for landfill gas potential assessment and train around 30 professionals of the Solid Waste Management Company to perform monitoring of landfill gas independently.

Building capacities of the Solid Waste Management Company, one of the key stakeholders in this field is crucial for improving waste management in Georgia. Recognising the significance of tackling the issue, Georgian authorities have put efforts in reforming the existing waste management system with the support of European donors. The INOGATE’s work builds upon and enhances these efforts and initiatives addressing the unmet needs.

Proper waste management plays a significant role in ensuring resource efficiency and the sustainable growth of economy. This assistance aims at helping the country to harness the viable potential for energy generation from landfill gas and reduce the environmental and health impacts of methane gas emissions from landfills.

This support of INOGATE is another stepping-stone on Georgia’s path to approximation to European policies and standards and establishing robust systems and practices to turn waste into a resource where possible.
